Mazzocco bill repealing obsolete insurance laws unanimously advances through PA Senate

HARRISBURG, Oct. 20 – Today, legislation (H.B. 2473) introduced by state Rep. Jen Mazzocco, was unanimously passed by the state Senate. The legislation would repeal obsolete insurance laws and remove requirements for already-completed studies.

House Bill 2473 would repeal the Flood Insurance Education and Information Act and remove language mandating studies and reports that were completed more than a decade ago. The legislation would not affect any programs implemented by the Pennsylvania Insurance Department and would only clean up outdated provisions.

This is Mazzocco’s first bill to advance through both the Pennsylvania House and Senate; it received a unanimous House vote on June 22.

“Taking these outdated tasks off the plate of the Insurance Department will keep the department efficient and ensure our tax dollars are going toward relevant work,” Mazzocco said. “I’m grateful to my colleagues for recognizing the need to streamline our insurance laws and keep them effective for all Pennsylvanians.”

The Flood Insurance Education and Information Act, enacted in 1996, required the Pennsylvania insurance commissioner to create a consumer education plan to increase awareness of flood insurance. The department has since established and enhanced educational efforts, leaving the act obsolete.

House Bill 2473 now heads to the governor’s desk for signing.
