McCarter: Wolf’s executive order shows need to move on LGBT discrimination bill

GLENSIDE, April 7 – State Rep. Steve McCarter, D-Montgomery, issued the following statement after Gov. Tom Wolf announced his executive order prohibiting discrimination by state contractors against people who are lesbian, gay bisexual or transgender:

“I applaud Governor Tom Wolf for his decision to move forward and take positive action against sexual orientation and gender discrimination that is, frankly, an embarrassment to our state. By signing this executive order, Governor Wolf is attempting to lead from the front and set the right example that the legislature would be wise to follow.

“There are a host of reasons that passing House Bill 1510 and outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression is necessary, but the biggest reason is that it is the smart, moral thing to do for Pennsylvania. Our own state constitution begins with a statement of the inherent rights we all share, and one of those rights is protection from discrimination. It’s time we abide by that statement.

“It’s unconscionable that in 2016, residents of Pennsylvania can be fired from their jobs, denied apartments or refused services by a business because of who they are. We’ve seen the reaction in other states that passed laws allowing discrimination against members of the LGBT community and we cannot allow that to happen here. Our citizens deserve better, and the General Assembly needs to work together to pass House Bill 1510 and ensure that Pennsylvania can continue to be a beacon of freedom welcoming all to our state.”
