According to the most recent data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the commonwealth has the fourth-highest rate of drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people in the country. State health officials, citing increases in 2017 emergency room visits for opioid overdoses, expect the death toll to rise.

“None of us is untouched by this epidemic,” said McCarter, D-Montgomery. “It is evident in our towns, on our streets and, sometimes, in our very homes. If we are to help ourselves, our neighbors and fellow Pennsylvanians, we need insight into the problem, information about available treatment resources and every ally we can identify in this fight.”
