Mt. Lebanon fire training facility selected for state grant

Mt. Lebanon, Oct. 23 – A project to establish a regional fire training facility in the South Hills has been awarded more than $600,000 as part of the statewide Local Share Account grant program administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development.

State Rep. Dan Miller, D-Allegheny, has been working with Mt. Lebanon and state Sen. Wayne Fontana, D-Allegheny, to help secure funding for the training center, and previously helped secure a $200,000 state grant to build the facility.

“I want to thank Senator Fontana for working with Mt. Lebanon to help support this project and move it forward,” Miller said. “This new facility, a priority identified by the Mt. Lebanon Commission and the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department, will enhance training capabilities for MTLFD and the surrounding mutual aid companies. I want to congratulate and thank all the people at Mt. Lebanon and the fire department who have worked to make this happen.”

The $621,000 grant will be used to purchase six shipping containers, which will be located at the municipality’s public works yard. The containers will be welded together in various designs to allow fire fighters to train on various types of conditions and activities, including hose line advancement, forceable entry, interior wall breaching and live fire simulations.

Statewide Local Share Account funding comes from the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, which provides for the distribution of gaming revenues through CFA to support projects in the public interest in Pennsylvania.
