Mullery named to five House committees
HARRISBURG, Jan. 21 – State Rep. Gerald Mullery, D-Newport Township, was appointed to serve on five House committees for the 2015-16 legislative session: Education, Game and Fisheries, Health, Judiciary and Local Government.
“These appointments give me a seat at the table as we consider a wide variety of legislation that would impact the day-to-day lives of people from Luzerne County and across the commonwealth,” Mullery said. “It’s a privilege to serve on these committees.”
The committee system allows legislators to assess and amend legislation, and evaluate important issues, before sending bills to the full House for a vote.
Mullery, embarking on his third term, previously served on the Game and Fisheries and Health committees. This is his first term on the Education, Judiciary and Local Government committees.
Mullery said his experience will help with his reappointment to the Game and Fisheries and Health committees. He said he’s also eager to tackle the challenges brought on by his new appointments.
The Education Committee reviews bills dealing with educational funding, school choice and charter schools, teacher standards and more. The Judiciary Committee reviews bills pertaining to law enforcement and corrections, and has oversight over a number of state agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police and the Department of Corrections. The Local Government Committee reviews legislation affecting counties, cities, boroughs and townships.
The Health Committee reviews bills pertaining to health issues in Pennsylvania. The Game and Fisheries Committee reviews bills affecting the Game Commission and the Fish and Boat Commission.
