Senate Transportation Committee approves bill to name bridge in memory of fallen federal corrections officer
HARRISBURG, June 16 – The state Senate’s Transportation Committee on Tuesday voted out state Rep. Gerald Mullery’s bill that would name a bridge in Conyngham Township in honor of a local federal corrections officer killed in the line of duty.
House Bill 629, which would name the bridge on S.R. 3005 over the outlet of Lily Lake as the Senior Officer Eric J. Williams Memorial Bridge, can now be considered by Senate.
“I am hopeful the Senate will pass my bill and send it to the governor for his signature so we can honor Eric’s memory and the sacrifice he made,” said Mullery, D-Newport Township.
A corrections officer at the U.S. Penitentiary, Canaan, Williams was killed during an unprovoked attack by an inmate in February 2013. He was 34 years old.
Williams was an avid outdoorsman, and he enjoyed spending time at a cottage he owned on Lilly Lake. He was a native of Nanticoke.
