NANTICOKE, Nov. 3 – State Rep. Gerald Mullery, D-Luzerne, today announced an upcoming Pennsylvania Department of Education Safe Schools Initiative grant for the Greater Nanticoke Area School District to help keep students safe from violence.
The district will receive $14,000 for crisis management training.
"Our children expect their school to be a safe environment, but unfortunately in this day and age, that feeling of safety can be quickly violated,” Mullery said. “I am pleased the district is receiving this grant to help better prepare the students, faculty and staff on how to avoid a crisis.”
“The grant will be utilized to extend school-wide positive behavior support in the high school,” said Dr. Ronald Grevera, superintendent of the Greater Nanticoke Area School District. “This program enables us to teach soft skills (social skills) to our high school students. We are also going to be doing some safety training with our teachers.”
The money is part of $6.5 million in competitive grants to be awarded statewide for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers, and to prevent and reduce violent incidents through programs and security equipment.
