Nanticoke resident Don Williams, whose son Eric was killed in the line of duty at USP Canaan in 2013, visited Rep. Mullery at the state Capitol and urged the House to pass S.B. 748. Williams joined the Voices of JOE and the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association in lobbying for the bill. It would require sufficient notice and feedback of any potential state correctional facility closure in an effort to decrease the chaos and stress placed on employees and local communities where a prison closing will occur.

Mullery is encouraged by the governor’s strong commitment to increasing education funding, enhancing drug treatment proposals, creating a severance tax on natural gas drilling, and raising the minimum wage to $12 an hour.

Congratulations to Nanticoke's Katarina Ferrucci, the 2012 Miss Luzerne County Fair Queen. She will represent Luzerne County at the state competition in Hershey in January. Next year, she'll attend Hartwick College in New York where she will major in biology/premed as she works toward her goal of becoming a surgeon.

Rep. Miss Luzerne County Teen Rebecca Zaneski, a freshman at Wyoming Valley West and a resident of Edwardsville, and her mother, Linda Zaneski, a former Miss Pennsylvania, visit Rep. Miss Luzerne County Teen Rebecca Zaneski, a freshman at Wyoming Valley West and a resident of Edwardsville, and her mother, Linda Zaneski, a former Miss Pennsylvania, visit Rep. James Horning of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, who replaced 150 veterans’ grave markers that were stolen from three adjoining cemeteries in Glen Lyon: St. Adalbert’s, St. Michael’s and Italian Independent. He is considering legislation that would increase penalties for theft of veterans’ markers and to implement a monitoring system at scrap yards to prevent them from accepting the markers. The markers were made of brass.
