Mullins announces two grants to locally combat sexual assault
HARRISBURG, Jan. 17 – State Rep. Kyle Mullins announced that Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and Marywood University were awarded grants as part of a statewide movement to combat campus sexual assault at 36 colleges and universities.
Marywood University, awarded $29,986, and Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, awarded $30,000, will use the funding to help create programs ranging from campus-wide training for students, faculty and staff, to raising awareness of the reporting processes and resources available to survivors of sexual violence.
“There are some 430,000 cases of sexual assault and rape reported each year across this country, many occurring on our college campuses, and this is the number of incidents we know about,” Mullins said. “Sadly, many victims feel they cannot report their assault or get the help they need and deserve. Raising awareness via this important initiative is vital within our moral responsibility to do better for those victims, and I thank Governor Wolf and Secretary Rivera for directing these resources here in Lackawanna County.”
It’s On Us is a national initiative championed by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. The Wolf administration has invested nearly $4 million for It’s On Us grants over four years.
