Mullins welcomes governor to Scranton as he signs expansion of Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

SCRANTON, Aug. 4 – State Rep. Kyle Mullins today joined Gov. Josh Shapiro as he signed into law an expansion of the successful Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

“For too long, residents struggled to keep up with increasing property taxes and rent, and for too long, politicians only talked about helping them out. But finally, under the leadership of House Democrats and with bipartisan support, nearly 175,000 additional homeowners and renters will be eligible and many of the 400,000 current recipients will see their rebates almost doubled under the expanded Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

“This is an overdue measure, especially for those on a fixed income, but it cannot be the last when it comes to property tax relief. I remain committed to those reforms which must start with fully funding our schools at the state level to alleviate pressure on local property taxpayers,” said Mullins, D-Lackawanna.

The expansion increases the income limits for the PTRR Program to $45,000 for homeowners and renters. The current limits are $35,000 for homeowners and $15,000 for renters. The maximum rebate increases to $1,000 from the current $650.

Income limits for the program had not increased since January 2007.

Mullins said the deadline to apply for a rebate on 2022 taxes or rent is Dec. 31 and his district office is available to help people with their application. The office is located at 520 Burke Bypass in Olyphant and the phone number is 570-383-9795.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery, began in 1971 to benefit older adults and adults with disabilities. Applicants can exclude half of their Social Security income when determining eligibility.
