State Rep. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, announced today the allocation of $500,000 in funding from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program to support structural roofing and exterior improvements to the historic former St. Alphonsus Retreat House.
For generations, the former St. Alphonsus Retreat House has been a recognizable part of the Coolbaugh Township landscape, serving as a place of reflection, gathering and community connection. Like many historic structures throughout Monroe County, the building represents an important link to the region’s past and the people and traditions that helped shape the community.
The required improvements include removal of the deteriorated tower and infilling of the opening, reroofing with new shingles, flashing and underlayment, and replacement of failing windows and exterior doors.
Additional work includes repointing masonry, repairing facade cracks, replacing plaster ceilings and cleaning and painting steel lintels.
“This $500,000 investment is important in preserving one of Coolbaugh Township’s most significant historic landmarks,” Madden said. “The former St. Alphonsus Retreat House is an important part of our community’s heritage, and these critical structural improvements will help protect the building for future generations. I appreciate the commonwealth’s commitment to investing in projects that preserve our history while also creating opportunities for continued revitalization.”
Preserving historic buildings like the former St. Alphonsus Retreat House allows communities to maintain a tangible connection to their past while ensuring these landmarks continue to serve as valuable community assets for years to come.
