SCRANTON, Oct. 21 – State Rep. Bridget Kosierowski, D-Lackawanna, announced that she secured, with state Sen. Marty Flynn’s support, nearly $40 million in funding from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority to construct two stormwater storage facilities and a water treatment system serving Lakeland Junior and Senior high schools.
The Lakeland School District will receive a $352,000 grant to install a 25-gallons-per-minute treatment system serving the Lakeland Junior and Senior high schools to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, more commonly referred to as PFAS, from drinking water.
Pennsylvania-American Water Company will receive a $38 million low-interest loan to construct two stormwater storage facilities to reduce the number of combined sewer overflows annually. Components to be installed at each of the new storage facilities include precast post-tensioned tanks, diversion structures and grit chambers, valve and meter chambers, and associated piping and manholes. The stormwater storage facilities constructed during this project will contribute to a reduction in the number of combined sewer overflows annually. This project’s completion will directly support the preservation of approximately 3,700 jobs with several large local employers: Geisinger Community Medical Center, Marywood University and Commonwealth Health Moses Taylor Memorial Hospital.
“This funding will help fund upgrades that protect the health of our students and our teachers with clean drinking water and safeguard thousands of local jobs with more reliable infrastructure,” Kosierowski said. “I’m grateful to the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority for recognizing how much these projects matter to our region’s future.”
The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority provides low-cost financial assistance to address water, wastewater, stormwater and non-point source pollution problems that impact public health, safety, the environment, regulatory compliance and economic development.
