Women’s Health Caucus calls for investigation into ‘Real Alternatives’ nonprofit

HARRISBURG, Aug. 13 The Democratic chairs of the Pennsylvania Women’s Health Caucus called on PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro to investigate an organization known as Real Alternatives that claims to administer pregnancy and parental support services.

The WHC chairs – state Rep. Mary Jo Daley, D-Montgomery; state Sen. Judy Schwank, D-Berks; and state Rep. Morgan B. Cephas, D-Phila. – called the actions of the nonprofit into question, writing, “For more than 20 years, an organization known as Real Alternatives has been enriching itself and its executives, mismanaging state-appropriated funding, and potentially misdirecting that funding for advertising and legal services, including using Pennsylvania dollars in other states.”

Based on information from a 2016 Auditor General report, an investigation conducted by the Campaign for Accountability, and transcripts of depositions from court proceedings, the WHC chairs believe there is evidence for Shapiro’s office to open an investigation.
