Petrarca: Resolution recommends ID badges for corrections officers
HARRISBURG, Nov. 19 – A resolution that recommends the state Department of Corrections provide identification badges for corrections officers was reported out of the House Judiciary Committee, state Rep. Joseph Petrarca announced today.
Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong/Indiana, said as essential employees who are often called on to assist or intervene in a variety of emergency incidents, there is currently no standard identification badge that alerts emergency service providers, law enforcement personnel or other officials to the identify of corrections officers.
“Having standardized credentials for these officers would be extremely helpful, ensuring their safety on the job, but also at crime scenes and when assisting in emergency situations with other law enforcement and emergency service professionals,” Petrarca said. “More than 30 other states provide identification badges to their corrections officers, and our state needs to do the same.”
