Sainato: $350,000 awarded to bolster security for Lawrence County schools

NEW CASTLE, Feb. 26 – State grants totaling $350,000 will boost safety for seven Lawrence County school districts, state Rep. Chris Sainato, D-Lawrence, announced today.

Sainato said the funding – administered by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency – will go a long way toward keeping school environments safe.

“The funding announced today will allow our school districts to implement a broad spectrum of resources, including retaining social workers and other staff who can recognize warning signs and prevent incidents; implementing critical planning; and upgrading security equipment with the latest technology,” Sainato said. “Thanks to this funding, schools in our district will be able to ensure the safest possible environment for our students.”

Sainato said the funding includes the following:

  • $30,000 to Laurel School District for training and compensation of school resource and police officers.
  • $35,000 to Mohawk Area School District for security planning and purchase of school safety equipment.
  • $35,000 to Neshannock Township School District for security planning and purchase of school safety equipment.
  • $40,000 to New Castle Area School District for security planning, purchase of school safety equipment and training and compensation of school resource and police officers.
  • $30,000 to Shenango Area School District for safety and security assessments and planning, the purchase of safety equipment and training.
  • $150,000 to Union Area School District for safety planning, the purchase of safety equipment, and training and compensation of school counselors and social workers. 
  • $30,000 to Wilmington Area School District for security planning and purchase of school safety equipment. 

The School Safety and Security Grant Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency's School Safety and Security Committee, which is tasked with developing the criteria that schools must use in performing safety and security assessments.
