2026-27 State Budget Proposal Unveiled Last Week

Governor Shapiro presented his budget proposal for 2026-27 on February 3 and the House and Senate have begun our budget review. I support the significant new investments in education proposed by the Governor, including $50 million more for basic education, $50 million more for special education, and $565 million in Adequacy and Equity payments to underfunded school districts like the Bethlehem Area School District. This funding, if approved in the final budget, will be the third payment in our state’s effort to close an education funding gap identified in a 2023 Commonwealth Court decision.

Under the proposed budget, the Bethlehem Area School District would get $5.25 million in additional state funding through basic education, special education and adequacy and equity payments.

PA ABLE Expands Eligibility

The PA ABLE Savings Program has expanded eligibility, allowing thousands more Pennsylvanians with disabilities to take advantage of a tax-free way to save for their future. Individuals may now open a PA ABLE account if their disability began before age 46 — an increase from the previous age limit of 26.

Participants can contribute up to $19,000 annually, use funds for a wide range of disability-related expenses, and deduct contributions from taxable income on Pennsylvania state income taxes. Visit this page to learn more or call 855-529-ABLE (2253).

Lehigh Pizza Celebrates 50 Years

From left to right: Rep. Samuelson, Laura Collins, City of Bethlehem Director of Community and Economic Development, Lucas Gouvalis and George Lioudis from Lehigh Pizza, and James Schantz, constituency relations representing Sen. Boscola.

On Monday, February 9, I, along with representatives from the city and Senator Boscola‘s office attended the Southside Arts District event celebrating the 50th anniversary of two local businesses. Pictured here is the recognition of Lehigh Pizza, who actually observed their 50th in October of last year. In the next issue of the newsletter, we will highlight another local establishment, which is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year in 2026.
