Changes to rein in abusive use of fireworks head to governor

HARRISBURG, July 1 – Legislation that would put some sensible restrictions on the use of consumer fireworks is headed to the governor’s desk.

“While I would have preferred a ban on consumer fireworks, this bill is better than current law. It addresses some of the concerns that have been raised in communities across Pennsylvania,” said state Rep. Mike Schlossberg, D-Lehigh. “I encourage anyone who uses fireworks to do so safely and follow state guidelines.”

The state law concerning fireworks was loosened in 2017 to allow the use of fireworks more often and in many locations across Pennsylvania, but that usage has become a real nuisance on an almost weekly basis, particularly during warm weather.

The state House of Representatives and Senate passed legislation (H.B. 2157) this week that would add restrictions and increase penalties.
