Bipartisan lawmakers gather to create a pro-housing agenda for Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Feb. 2 – Today, state Reps. Jared Solomon, Joe Hogan, John Inglis, and Abby Major unveiled a new package of legislation that will address Pennsylvania’s housing crisis.

Solomon outlined the package with Hogan that addresses local barriers to development, encourages bureaucratic reform, and sets overarching housing policy for the state.

“We have a housing crisis in PA and across the nation. Housing is too expensive- young and old are being priced out of the market. Today, we are working collaboratively to ensure all Pennsylvanians have an affordable place to live and raise their families,” Solomon said.

Solomon explained that zoning and parking restrictions have largely contributed to the housing crisis, as well as a 42% inflation increase in the housing market due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With that high inflation comes an increase in monthly payments, taxes, and insurance,” Solomon said. “We are here today to create a pro-housing agenda for Pennsylvania.”

“For too long our state has made it too difficult for developers to invest in our communities,” said Inglis. “States ranging from Colorado to California to Texas, Florida and North Carolina have all begun making similar changes, cutting government red tape to spur housing development in their states. It’s time Pennsylvania does the same. The time for affordable, abundant housing in Pennsylvania is now.”

The lawmakers agreed that cutting red tape and incentivizing localities to create housing units will benefit millions of hardworking Pennsylvanians – propelling millions of renters into the dream of homeownership.

“This bipartisan package of bills looks at some of the root causes of higher prices built up over years. If Pennsylvania is going to be economic leader in the Northeast, the state needs obtainable housing to keep and retain a world-class workforce,” Hogan said.

“As we are working to grow Pennsylvania’s economy, we need to make sure there is enough affordable housing,” Major said. “I stand with my colleagues in efforts to remove barriers and work with local officials to spur more affordable housing options.”

“Every person deserves a safe place to call home and far too many Pennsylvanians don’t have access to that basic human right. Today was a call to action for my colleagues and I to work together to fix Pennsylvania’s housing crisis. This is an issue that we all can agree on – people deserve to live with dignity.”
