Bryan’s Law Advances with Unanimous Bipartisan Support

Dear Friends,

I want to share important news. My legislation, HB 237, known as Bryan’s Law, has advanced from the Pennsylvania Veterans and Emergency Preparedness Committee with a unanimous bipartisan vote.

This is a meaningful step forward for a bill grounded not in politics, but in responsibility and compassion. I am including a video of my testimony before the committee, and I encourage you to take a moment to watch it. It will help you understand why this legislation is so important.

Video

On January 18th, 2024, Pennsylvania State Trooper Bryan Gray lost his life to suicide at only 36 years old. He left behind his pregnant wife and his very young child. In the weeks that followed, Bryan’s wife, Emily, not only lost her husband and the father of her children, but also the family’s health insurance. This devastating experience became the starting point for HB 237.

Bryan’s Law is more than a policy proposal. It is a promise to the men and women who run toward danger when others are running away. Our first responders carry burdens that most people will never fully see, and those burdens often remain long after the call ends.

When a first responder loses their life to suicide, the impact on their family is just as profound as any other line of duty death. In many cases, the loss is directly connected to the emotional and psychological toll of their service. Bryan’s Law acknowledges this reality. It ensures that these tragedies are treated with the dignity they deserve and that families are not left to navigate their darkest moment without support.

Regrettably, Bryan’s story is not an isolated one. It is a reminder that honoring our first responders requires us to confront the full weight of what they endure.

As you watch the video, I hope you will think about the families who have already suffered this kind of loss and the many first responders who continue to show up for us every single day.

“Building Community Solutions: Owning the Narrative”

It was truly amazing to join HealthSpark Foundation at their Community of Practice event, Building Community Solutions: Owning the Narrative.

This gathering was a powerful day of insight as community leaders shared perspectives and real-world experiences. Together, we uplifted the power of advocacy, honored lived experience, and celebrated the collective efforts shaping our community’s future.

The truth is that none of the challenges facing our communities can be solved by one person, one organization, or one institution alone. Whether we are talking about community safety in the wake of immigration enforcement, youth leadership, or access to affordable housing, real progress happens when people come together with a shared sense of responsibility and care.

When leaders from different sectors sit at the same table and share ideas, we begin to see new possibilities for collaboration and solutions that truly meet the needs of our communities.

Just as important as the conversations themselves is the spirit behind them. It is the belief that we can do better for the people around us. It is the belief that our neighbors deserve dignity, opportunity, and support. And it is the belief that when we work together, we can build stronger, healthier, and more connected communities for everyone.
