Earlier this week, I voted with my House colleagues to pass a state budget bill. Our proposed spending plan reflects compromise – it would trim nearly $1 billion from the governor’s proposal while still delivering needed investments in our public schools and other essential services. Importantly, it would not include any new taxes.

This is still a work in progress, as the general appropriations bill and other enabling legislation must still be considered and passed by the state Senate. I hope to see continued movement and will keep you updated as a final plan emerges.

In other news from the state House, I supported – and we passed – a number of bills this month to protect consumers, safeguard vulnerable Pennsylvanians, and improve public health and safety. They include bills that would:

• Safeguard hotel workers by requiring employers to provide devices that serve as “panic buttons” for employees working alone servicing guest rooms.
• Better educate consumers about reverse mortgages.
• Increase awareness of the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline.
• Protect the rights of children in youth detention centers and other facilities that hold children in custody.
• Help address the teacher shortage by updating PA’s teacher certification levels to make it easier to fill open positions.
• Ban companies from automatically signing consumers up for paid services after a free trial ends.
• Allow consumers to cancel subscription services online.
