Brian's Briefing for November 21: Bills headed to the governor's desk, adjusted office hours for Thanksgiving, and more

Dear Neighbors,

As we head toward the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to take a moment to send you and your loved ones the best wishes of myself and my team. Thanksgiving offers a chance to reflect on the things we’re grateful for and the community we’ve built together. Whether you’re spending the holiday with family, friends, or neighbors, I hope you find warmth and happiness as you share a meal together.

In this email, you’ll find helpful information on legislation heading to the governor’s desk, financial assistance for higher education for children of eligible veterans, deer hunting season, and more.

Thank you for the continued trust and support. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding state government. You may do so simply by replying to this email, or by calling my office at (215) 323-6997.

In Service,

Legislation Headed to the Governor’s Desk

This week in Harrisburg we saw several bills sent to the governor’s desk to be signed into law. They include

  • House Bill 439, the Crown Act, which will prohibit discrimination based on a person’s hair type, hair texture, or hairstyle.
  • House Bill 923, which will protect PACE and PACENET recipients from losing their benefits due to Social Security cost-of-living increases.
  • House Bill 1176, which reduces the red tape for heirs filing unclaimed property claims.
  • Senate Bill 88, which requires health insurance plans to cover all breast imaging needed in diagnosing breast cancer, without patient cost-sharing

Adjusted Office Hours Next Week

To celebrate Thanksgiving, our office will be closed, Wednesday, Nov. 26 through Friday, Nov. 28

Support for Children of Pennsylvania Veterans
Pursuing Higher Education

As the new school semester approaches, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is offering financial assistance to eligible children of veterans through the Educational Gratuity Program. The program helps children of honorably discharged wartime veterans with service-connected total and permanent disabilities, as well as children of veterans who died in service, with tuition, books, and other educational expenses.

Eligible applicants (ages 16–23, Pennsylvania residents for 5+ years, attending a PA school, and demonstrating financial need) can receive up to $4,000 per child. Funds can be applied to colleges, trade schools, or apprenticeships throughout the state.

To apply, contact your County Director of Veterans Affairs. More information, including eligibility and required documents, is available on the DMVA Educational Gratuity Program page.

PennDOT Locations Closed for Thanksgiving
