Pisciottano announces $2 million for West Mifflin sewer upgrades

ARPA grants to support municipal water improvements, local nonprofit

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 19 – The Commonwealth Financing Authority has awarded over $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to improve area sewer systems and support a nonprofit, state Rep. Nick Pisciottano, announced today.

“These funds will make major improvements to West Mifflin’s sewer system and ultimately help create a better-quality life for borough residents,” said Pisciottano. “I’m committed to bringing every grant dollar possible back home to make our community the best it can be.”

Funds from ARPA were awarded to the following entities in the 38th Legislative District:

  • $1.5 million to West Mifflin Sanitary Sewer Municipal Authority for grit removal equipment and operational improvements at the Thompson Run Sewage Treatment Plant.
  • $400,000 to West Mifflin Sanitary Sewer Municipal Authority for pump station improvements within the borough.
  • $107,563 to West Mifflin Borough for the replacement of a section of storm sewer on Melvin Drive that extends down to the rear of 309 Regis Ave.
  • $15,405 to Dreams of Hope for operating, marketing, and programming expenses.

Pisciottano thanked several state officials for their roles in securing this funding, noting he partnered with state Sen. Jim Brewster and state Rep. Matt Gergely, both D-Allegheny, on the significant investments in West Mifflin’s water infrastructure. He also partnered with state Sen. Jay Costa, D-Allegheny, to secure the grant for Dreams of Hope.

The sewer funding was distributed through the PA Small Water and Sewer Program, which provides for small water, sewer, and storm system water infrastructure projects. Act 54 of 2022 appropriated $105.6 million of ARPA funds to the PA Small Water and Sewer Program.

Funding for Dreams of Hope was distributed through the PA Arts and Culture Recovery Program, which provides grants to nonprofit arts and culture organizations located in the commonwealth. Act 54 of 2022 appropriated $15 million of ARPA funds to the COVID-19 ARPA PA Arts and Culture Recovery Program.

The above grants were awarded through the CFA, an independent agency of the state Department of Community and Economic Development established in 2004 to administer Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus packages.
