Implosion to occur in Springdale

Steele advises residents to avoid the area Friday, Sept. 22

SPRINGDALE, Sept. 6 – Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Allegheny, warns residents of a planned implosion of the Boiler House Building, located within the former Cheswick Power Station, on Friday, Sept. 22, and advises residents to avoid the area.

The implosion, led by CPERG, Grant Mackay Co. and Controlled Demolition Inc., will occur shortly after 8 a.m., and residents might see dust, hear noise, or feel vibrations.

“To ensure the safety of residents, I’ve asked the Department of Environmental Protection to thoroughly review the demolition and monitor the area,” Steele said. “In the wake of the first demolition, my office received calls from numerous residents with concerns about health risks from the dust blanketing certain areas. To ensure the safety of residents, water trucks will spray down dust in the area.”

Residents should avoid the area as much as possible, she noted.

From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sept. 22, Freeport Road and Pittsburgh Street will close from Murrayhill Avenue in Cheswick to Colfax Street in Springdale Borough. Signage will indicate alternative routes and police officers will direct traffic.

Steele advises residents to contact her office at 724-826-5151 if they have any questions about the impending implosion
