SCRANTON, June 10 – State Reps. Mike Carroll, Bridget M. Kosierowski, Kyle Mullins and Thom Welby today announced the distribution of Lackawanna County’s Local Share Account grants to communities throughout the county. CLARKS SUMMIT, April 26 – State Rep. Thom Welby announces that several projects in his legislative district will receive grants totaling $3.15 million through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. “This funding supports projects that will have a significantly positive impact on our community,” said Welby, D-Lackawanna. “Each of these projects represents jobs in the greater Scranton area and more opportunities for those who live in and visit the city. I thank Governor Wolf for acknowledging the importance of these projects.” Welby said the funding will benefit the following projects: City of Scranton – $1 million for the Biden Street streetscape project. Work will include installing cement concrete sidewalks, colored stamped concrete sidewalks, concrete curb, storm inlet with sump/hood, storm pipe, rain gardens, tree and tree pit, disability ramp, raised intersections for traffic calming, period lights with foundation, sidewalk vault repairs, bike land solid markings, street sign with period poles, wiring and conduit, power supply, and testing pavement resurfacing and lighted entrance signage. SCRANTON, March 29 – State Reps. Thom Welby and Bridget M. Kosierowski, both D-Lackawanna, announced that funding totaling $2.97 million from the American Rescue Plan Act will be utilized to support the health care workforce needs of three hospitals in Lackawanna County. “Health care workers have been at the front lines fighting the pandemic for over two years and unfortunately, many health care facilities are struggling to keep these heroes on the workforce while these facilities remain at or exceeding capacity for patients,” Welby said. “This funding, which I was pleased to support and vote for, will allow these health care centers to recruit the critical personnel they need to serve our community.” Kosierowski added, "The need for qualified nurses to take care of those who need care is a critical problem that has only been exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. I am pleased to see this funding will be used to help solve understaffing and overworking issues these professionals face on a daily basis." According to Welby, the following health care centers in Lackawanna County are receiving funding: Geisinger Community Medical Center - $1,730,169. Moses Taylor Hospital - $720,412. HARRISBURG, March 22 – A state grant totaling $45,000 has been awarded to Lackawanna County by the state Department of Labor & Industry to help job seekers develop critical tech skills and digital platform training, state Rep. Thom Welby announced today. “Everyone needs to be able to use a computer and understand the latest technology in order to work in today’s industries,” said Welby, D-Lackawanna. “The knowledge gained will not only help people find careers while searching the internet, but they can also take those computer literacy skills and utilize them in the workplace as well.” Welby said the Lackawanna County Workforce Development Board, in collaboration with Marywood University and the PA CareerLink of Lackawanna County will use the Digital Literacy and Workforce Development Grant for a series of courses to train job seekers on searching for jobs online and how to use digital platforms, making them more viable candidates in a highly-competitive job market. Welby said the courses, which will take place August 2022 through July 31, 2023, will include at least 40 people with low levels of digital literacy and has a goal of 32 participants earning digital literacy competency certificates. The funding is part of a package of grants to 21 organizations. Digital literacy grants support the commonwealth’s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Combined State Plan and are 100% federally funded. Read more
