The Bucks County delegation and House Speaker Mike Turzai this week welcomed the 2015 PIAA Boys Class AA championship basketball team, the Conwell-Egan Eagles, to Harrisburg, where the team was recognized in the House chamber. The Eagles, coached by Frank Sciolla, captured the school's first ever state championship and the first boys basketball PIAA title in lower Bucks County since 1975, by defeating previously unbeaten Aliquippa 62-51 in March in Hershey.

Act 79 requires scrap processors and recycling facilities to register with the state police, increase the credentials required for transactions involving restricted materials, such as railroad ties, and gives courts the authority to impound vehicles linked to scrap metal thefts. I joined forces with state Sen. David Argall, sitting at left, to craft the measure. The effort was spurred in a large part by 1-year-old Hannah Ginion of Bristol Township. Hannah, daughter of Vicki Pizzullo and Justin Ginion, is among the innocents stricken with Krabbe disease, an inherited and often fatal disorder that targets infants. Joining me for the bill signing are Rep. Rosita Youngblood, Justin Ginion, Vicki Pizzullo, Rep. Angel Cruz, Ms. Pizzullo’s mother and Rep. Frank  Farry. The Grade 5 Eco Club from Bristol Township’s Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School were treated to a trout outing, as the state Fish and Boat Commission treated us to an educational program about the environment, trout and their ecosystem. I welcomed the undefeated Neshaminy High School Girls’ Soccer Team and its coaching staff to the state Capitol, where they were honored in the House of Representatives for capturing their first state title in the 2013-14 PIAA Class AAA state championship game held in November at Hersheypark Stadium. En route to a state final, 2-1 overtime victory, the team posted 19 shutouts, won their second consecutive Suburban One National championship and the school’s first girls soccer District 1 crown. At left is House Speaker Sam Smith, and flanking me are state Reps. Frank Farry and Gene Digirolamo.

Gen. Schafer was the guest speaker for the event, which was attended by roughly 200 veterans and family members. I participated in the first-ever 2013 Capitol All-Stars softball game at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg.
The game featured members of the Pennsylvania House and Senate, and the bipartisan fund-raiser raised money for Feeding Pennsylvania and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania — organizations dedicated to serving more than 2 million needy Pennsylvanians through their food banks. I participated in the first-ever 2013 Capitol All-Stars softball game at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg. The game featured members of the Pennsylvania House and Senate, and the bipartisan fund-raiser raised money for Feeding Pennsylvania and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania — organizations dedicated to serving more than 2 million needy Pennsylvanians through their food banks. I was truly honored to win second place in the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Snaps of Service photo contest, in which citizens were asked to submit a photo of their public service. I am donating my $500 winnings to the Bucks County Chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national nonprofit organization that helps children realize their true potential by matching them with mentors. The winning photos will be on display at BPC's National Conversation on Public Service set for 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the National Constitution Center’s F.M. Kirby Auditorium, 525 Arch St., Philadelphia. More information about the event and the contest is available at http://bipartisanpolicy.org/blog. During a Capitol rally in May, I had the chance to speak to members of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE). This year marks the 10th anniversary of legislation that allows motorcyclists the choice of whether to wear a helmet while riding.

The state Capitol was rockin’ with a visit from Drummers with Attitude, a diverse group of drummers and dancers, including students from Bristol Township middle and high schools. Led by Kevin Travers, the dynamic percussion group has been performing since 2000 throughout the Philadelphia area and beyond.
