Markosek: Port Perry Bridge project to receive $1M state grant

Grant to fund repairs to 117-year-old railroad bridge in North Versailles

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 12 – A 117-year-old railroad bridge in North Versailles will receive some needed repairs thanks in part to a $1 million state grant, state Rep. Brandon Markosek, D-Allegheny, announced today.

“For 117 years this bridge has kept industry and goods moving through our region, a vital link from our region to the rest of the nation,” Markosek said. “This grant will fund needed repairs to the bridge and ensure that it can continue to serve our business and industry for years to come.”

The state Transportation Department grant, awarded to the Union Railroad Company, will allow for the replacement of the bridge’s floor beams and bridge stringers.

The State Transportation Commission voted Tuesday to approve $31.3 million to 26 projects through the Rail Transportation Assistance Program and the Rail Freight Assistance Program.

Pennsylvania has 65 operating railroads, which is more than any other state. PennDOT is committed to working with private rail operators and rail-served businesses to construct new rail lines and assist in maintaining and improving Pennsylvania’s roughly 5,600 miles of freight lines.
