Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
The first week of legislative session for 2025 was action-packed!
On Monday, I spoke at a joint press conference with the Women's Health Caucus and the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus. During these unprecedented times, we wanted to make sure we had our priorities laid out as we continue to fight for women and mothers everywhere to make their own decisions regarding their own health. You can watch my remarks through the link here.
I am excited to announce that one of my bills is already on the move! House Bill 111, also known as Lloyd's Law, was approved in the House Insurance Committee with unanimous support. This bill would prohibit insurers from denying coverage to individuals just because they have an opioid reversal agent in their prescription profile. I am hoping this bill will be considered by the full House next week for a vote and approval. You can watch my testimony to the House Insurance Committee at the link here.
On Wednesday, I also testified alongside my fellow co-chair of the PABMHC, state Rep. Morgan Cephas, on H.R. 26, which would establish Maternal Health Awareness Day. Creating maternal health equity starts with awareness and by providing a day dedicated to all the women who have died from childbirth does just that.
Lastly, I ended session with a stop at Gov. JOsh Shapiro's office with PABMHC Co-Chair state Rep. La'Tasha D. Mayes for the ceremonial signing of H.B. 2233! This law exempts tow truck operators from violations of state traffic laws and local ordinances while acting at the direct instruction of a law enforcement officer in the immediate response to an emergency. This law allows first responders and tow truck drivers to work together to perform rescue or recovery operations quickly and safely!

In partnership and service,

I was honored to be included in an event this past Saturday to recognize Human Trafficking Awareness Month, to discuss my bill, H.B. 434 that would bring the Ebony Alert system to Pennsylvania. Activist Bigga Dre and Rep Carol Kazeem and I got to address community members around the importance of this enhanced alert system to combat the disparities around locating missing children in our state.
The PA Black Maternal Health Caucus, The Governor’s Advisory Commission on African American Affairs, and Vetri Community Partnerships gathered to bridge the issues of Black maternal health and culinary medicine. I addressed the participants, which included doulas, community grassroots organizations and community members about the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus, our legislation and the importance of healthy eating to ensure a healthy birthing process.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is still accepting applications for the 2024-25 season. LIHEAP is a federally funded program administered by DHS that helps qualified Pennsylvanians pay their home heating bills during the winter months. Assistance is available for both renters and homeowners. The LIHEAP application period for cash and crisis grants is open until April 4, 2025.
LIHEAP assistance is available in the form of cash or crisis grants which are distributed directly to a household’s utility company or home heating fuel provider. Individuals or households do not have to repay assistance. The minimum LIHEAP cash grant is $200, and the maximum cash grant is $1,000. Individuals and households may receive one cash grant per LIHEAP season.
Households must apply for LIHEAP each year, so if an individual was approved or denied previously, DHS encourages them to apply again for the 2024-25 season. Start your application through the link here.

You can view a list of several grant programs that recently opened for applications, on my website.
