Making Rosh Hashanah, Eid al-Fitr, Yom Kippur, and Eid al-Adha Official Holidays of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
This week, my colleague Rep. Tarik Khan and I circulated a co-sponsorship memo for legislation recognizing Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Eid al-Adha, and Eid al-Fitr as official commonwealth holidays.
Despite the importance of these holidays to the more than half a million Jewish and Muslim residents in Pennsylvania, none are currently recognized as state holidays. Pennsylvania’s state holidays should reflect the vibrancy of the many cultures that call this state home.
Last year, we passed legislation to make the Hindu holiday of Diwali a state holiday, and Governor Shapiro signed it into law. Modeled after the Diwali legislation, our bill would recognize these important Jewish and Muslim holidays but would not mandate time off for schools or workplaces.
I am proud to partner with Rep. Khan on this effort and look forward to working with my colleagues to continue to build a commonwealth that respects and celebrates the traditions of all who call Pennsylvania home.
