LYME DISEASE -- What it is and what you can do to prevent and treat it

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in the United States. Pennsylvania sees between 3,000 and 7,000 cases each year, making it the fourth-most-common infectious disease for the commonwealth.

The key is to remove the attached tick as soon as possible. Symptoms typically appear within seven to 14 days, but could show up as early as three days or as late as 30.

It can cause flu-like symptoms. The disease is rarely fatal, but if not treated, more severe symptoms, such as arthritis, and heart and nervous-system problems may result. A bull's-eye rash also is common.

The best way to avoid Lyme disease is to avoid exposure to ticks by, among other tips:

  • Avoiding tick-infested areas;

  • Wearing light-colored clothing;

  • Wearing long pants and sleeves;

  • Using bug repellent containing DEET; and

  • Checking for ticks after being outside.
