Upper Moreland gets $575,000 state grant for Willow Grove Interchange Area Intersection

HARRISBURG, April 21 – Rep. Nancy Guenst, D-Montgomery/Phila., announced today that Upper Moreland Township has been awarded $575,000 in grant money through the Commonwealth Financing Authority Multimodal Transportation Fund Program to support improvements at the Willow Grove Interchange Area Intersection.

The grant money will be used to improve two intersections surrounding the PA Turnpike Willow Grove Interchange. Blair Mill Road will be widened along the northbound approach to Easton Road to lengthen the right turn lane by 400 feet and 500 feed of sidewalk will be constructed to complete a gap in sidewalk connectivity. Commerce Avenue will be redesigned and widened to include two eastbound lanes leading into two left-turn lanes where Commerce Road intersects Maryland Road. This would be complimented by a redesign and widening of Maryland Road to two northbound lanes to receive the turning traffic. This project will also replace a structurally deficient bridge on Maryland Road which is vital for trucks going to and from a UPS distribution center.

“The SEPTA exchange in Upper Moreland Township needs safety upgrades, and this money will help keep local taxes down as the township continues investing into the safety of the location,” Guenst said. “I congratulate the township on this well-deserved award, and I am dedicated to partnering with local officials to make further improvements in the community.”

The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth.

Funds may be used for the development, rehabilitation and enhancement of transportation assets to existing communities, streetscape, lighting, sidewalk enhancement, pedestrian safety, connectivity of transportation assets and transit-oriented development.
