Hanbidge bill to provide women with perimenopause and menopause educational materials passes the House
Rep. Liz Hanbidge October 7, 2026 | 11:14 AM
Legislation (H.B. 1411) introduced by state Rep. Liz Hanbidge, D-Montgomery, that would grant the Department of Health the power to enter into partnerships with healthcare providers to educate women on the symptoms, processes and other issues surrounding perimenopause and menopause passed the PA House on Tuesday.
“More than 75% of women experience the menopause transition while they are still working,” said Hanbidge. “Just this week, a woman reached out to tell me that after watching our menopause rally, she felt empowered to ask her doctor more questions and advocate for better treatment options. That is what education can do. It gives someone the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about her own health."
The legislation would allow the Department of Health to partner with obstetricians, gynecologists, community-based health centers, hospitals, and mental health providers. Working in collaboration, they will create digital and physical informational materials that include symptoms and treatments for perimenopause and menopause, symptoms of both in which one should consult a healthcare provider, the biological process behind it, how to talk to family and friends about it, and any other information that the department deems necessary and relevant.
“Menopause is not only a women’s health issue; it has real economic consequences for families, employers and Pennsylvania’s healthcare system,” Hanbidge said. “Better education can help women recognize symptoms earlier, seek appropriate care and prevent or manage health complications that can become costly if left untreated. When we give women the information they need to make informed health decisions, we can improve health outcomes, reduce avoidable healthcare costs and help women remain healthy and productive in the workforce.”
The bill now moves to the state Senate for consideration.
