Kenyatta announces $1.8 million in state funding to five organizations in North Philadelphia

State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta announced that $1.8 million in state funding was awarded to five organizations in North Philadelphia which provide invaluable services to uplift and empower the community.
The awarded organizations listed below range from expanding hospitality and networking opportunities at Temple University, empowering the workforce with hands-on training, and providing positive spaces for youth to grow, learn and play:
- $400,000 to Mt. Tabor Community Education and Economic Development to renovate a 56-unit senior housing facility.
- $200,000 to Opportunities Industrialization Center Inc. to remove dangerous asbestos, demolish and restore part of the building to allow for 20,000 square feet of future workforce development efforts.
- $300,000 to Friends Select School to turn a parking lot into an all ages playground and park.
- $200,000 to Temple University to allow for public access to Ritter Hall’s café.
- $50,000 to Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Center to renovate Cruz Recreation Center’s basketball court.
“As not only a state lawmaker but a life-long North Philadelphia resident, I know firsthand how we can help uplift our community. Supporting organizations that keep our youth engaged in positive activities, promote the power of community gathering and bolster workforce development by providing hands-on training for secure, well-paying jobs, plays a huge role in empowering North Philadelphia. I am thrilled that over $1 million was awarded to these projects and happy to support them in any way I can,” Kenyatta stated.
The grants were approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority to support projects in the public interest and projects that improve the quality of life of residents in the community.
The PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act provides for the distribution of gaming revenues through the CFA. Eligible projects include acquisition, construction, renovation and rehabilitation, demolition, infrastructure, purchase of vehicles, machinery and equipment, planning, consulting and design costs related to projects, engineering, and some administrative costs.
