Crafting a state budget for you and our community

Dear neighbor,

Gov. Josh Shapiro today delivered his 2025-26 state budget proposal before a joint session of the House and Senate. I was proud to invite two local Superintendents to be my guests on the floor for the budget address: Ridley School District Superintendent Lee Ann Wentzel and Penn-Delco Superintendent George Steinhoff.

You can read more about the Governor’s budget proposal here.

With so much uncertainty happening at the federal level concerning funding affecting every agency and program, my priority in this year’s budget is to secure the state dollars necessary to fund our public schools and local emergency services, along with programs that support our neighbors with disabilities and seniors living on fixed incomes.

Many of you have contacted my office over the past two weeks worried about whether your organization or family will lose federal funding for the community services you provide or the programs your family depends on. While there is a lot of uncertainty about how many of the Executive Orders signed over the last two weeks will be halted by the courts or Congress due to questions of unconstitutionality, I have been in close contact with Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon’s office and have shared the stories I have already heard from our neighbors. I encourage you to share your firsthand experiences with her office as well as our two US Senators, John Fetterman and David McCormick.

You can reach Congresswoman Scanlon’s office by calling 610-626-2020 or by visiting scanlon.house.gov. You can start a case file to address an issue with a federal agency by filling out the Privacy Release Form linked on her website. A listing of her satellite office hours can be found here.

You can reach Senator McCormick’s Office at 202-224-6324. You can reach Senator Fetterman’s Office at 202-224-4254

I will use this space to keep you updated on any impacts to federally funded programs administered by Pennsylvania like Head Start, Medicaid, LIHEAP and other essential programs. And I will keep you informed as the state budget progresses.

AT THE CAPITOL

Today in my Capitol office, I met with Michele Patterson from Humane Action Pennsylvania. Michele advocates for animal protection policies and we discussed my bill to protect wildlife by protecting against poached animal parts being sold in Pennsylvania.

IN THE DISTRICT

I ?? Visting Our Schools

I’m grateful to Notre Dame de Lourdes School Principal Diana Pileggi for inviting me to speak to their 4th-8th grade students about how state government works. The students had great questions and it was nice to visit them during Catholic Schools Week.

Hedgerow Theatre Grant Presentation

On Thursday, Senator John Kane and I visited Hedgerow Theatre Company in Rose Valley to present their staff and board with a $750,000 state grant for building improvements. Hedgerow is a hidden gem in Delco and I’m proud to support their work to make the theater more ADA accessible.

Digital Forensics Lab at Neumann University

A few years ago, I helped Aston Township Police Department with a small grant to upgrade their technology equipment. That investment helped them start a digital forensics program and Detective Joe Walsh and Chief Daniel Ruggieri shared their vision for an expanded program, which was very impressive. On Thursday I met with both of them to tour the new Digital Forensics Lab at Neumann University. It’s an amazing program that has already helped to solve crimes while training students to be the next generation of cybersecurity experts. Sometimes small grants can make a big difference!

Anglers Get Ready!

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has posted its 2025 trout stocking schedule!

The Delco Anglers have taught me so much about what it takes to keep our creeks stocked with the trout our local anglers love to catch. The Huntsdale State Fish Hatchery delivered some 4,000 Brook Trout and 50 Golden Rainbow Trout to the Delco Anglers late last year so those fish will be ready to be stocked in our local streams starting this month!

The full stocking schedule, where you can search by county, can be found here: https://fbweb.pa.gov/TroutStocking.

Here are some key dates for the season.

  • March 29 marks the statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day.
  • April 5 kicks off the statewide Opening Day of Trout Season.
  • Sunday, May 25 and Friday, July 4 are Fish for Free Days.
