Prospect’s announcement of Crozer Health System closure

Dear neighbor,

Delco received deeply disappointing news today when Prospect Medical Holdings told a bankruptcy judge in Texas that it will start closure proceedings on its entire Crozer Health system because it will run out of money on March 14. We learned this afternoon that, rather than approving the closure immediately, the bankruptcy judge gave a directive for a face-to-face meeting before noon on Monday between Prospect, the Attorney General’s office, the Foundation for Delaware County and the court-appointed Receiver.

This latest in a string of reckless moves by Prospect, even as the court-appointed Receiver continues to do its work in evaluating the hospital system’s financial condition and the needs of the system moving forward, demonstrated yet again that its primary goal is putting rich investors and shareholders before patient care and the needs of our community here in Delaware County.

This afternoon I spoke at a news conference in front of Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland Borough that was led by the nurses and frontline healthcare professionals in the Crozer system that have continued to serve their patients despite impossible working conditions. We stood together in solidarity to condemn Prospect’s irresponsible management of health care in our community and to again ask the Attorney General to file charges to hold Prospect accountable.

I also released this unified statement with fellow Delaware County legislators who are equally frustrated with Prospect and the havoc it has created in Delaware County.

I am grateful that Delaware County has a health department that has been working on contingency plans since the first time that Prospect threatened closure. I will be meeting with them tomorrow and will continue to update you on this important issue in our community.
