Dear Neighbor,

It’s hard to believe August is already coming to a close and students across our community are gearing up for a new school year, with some already back in the classroom. I want to wish all of our students, teachers, support staff, administrators, parents and caregivers a great school year ahead!

I also want to remind you about my upcoming blood drive this Thursday, August 27, from Noon to 5 PM at the Brookhaven Municipal Center. For only the second time in its history, the American Red Cross had declared a national blood crisis, with blood donations falling to a four-year summer low. If you are able, please consider rolling up your sleeve. Register here to make an appointment.

School bus safety

With the start of the school year, school buses will be back out on the roads during your daily commute. Here are a few reminders to help keep students safe this back-to-school season:

Yellow lights mean a school bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and watch for children.
Stop at least 10 feet away when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out. It’s the law.
Wait until the lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and children have reached safety before moving your car.

Violating PA's school bus stopping law can mean a fine of up to $300, a 60-day license suspension, and 5 points on your license. Learn more at pa.gov/schoolbus.

Celebrating a Gold Award achievement

Last Saturday, I was honored to present Virginia Reitmeyer of Girl Scout Troop 5299 with a joint citation from my office and Rep. Jen O’Mara’s office in recognition of earning her Girl Scout Gold Award.

For her Gold Award project, Virginia created a story walk featuring a monarch butterfly picture book to enhance the Monarch Waystation at the Helen Kate Furness Free Library. She also decorated a concrete bench with a beautiful mosaic, creating a welcoming place for community members to sit and enjoy nature and watch the pollinators at work.

Congratulations, Virginia, on this outstanding achievement and for creating something our community can enjoy for years to come!

Helping our community navigate Medicare

We had a packed room last night for my Medicare 101 workshop at the Aston Township Community Center. Attendees heard from a trained PA MEDI counselor and learned about Medicare basics, including enrollment periods, supplemental plans, copays, deductibles and more. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions and get helpful information as they navigate Medicare enrollment.

I’m always happy to provide programs like this to help our community better understand the resources and options available to them.

Public hearing on proposed EMS Authority

A public hearing will be held Wednesday, September 2 at 7 PM at Strath Haven Middle School, 200 S. Providence Rd., in Wallingford, regarding a proposal to create a joint municipal authority to administer emergency medical services (EMS).

The proposed authority would include the boroughs of Media, Rose Valley, Rutledge and Swarthmore, along with Nether Providence and Upper Providence townships.

The hearing will give residents an opportunity to learn more about the proposed authority and what it would mean for EMS services in these communities. Mark your calendar to attend if you live in one of these municipalities and have questions to ask about the plan.

Voting information for college students

It’s only August, but it’s never too early to start making your plans for Election Day, especially if you’re a college student.

In Pennsylvania, college students can register to vote at your college address, whether that’s on-campus or off-campus, or at your home address, if that’s still where your family lives.

Visit vote.pa.gov to register, update your information, request a mail ballot, or learn more about voting as a college student.

A statewide photo contest for litter awareness

Amateur photographers in PA have an opportunity to win money, earn credit for their work, and raise awareness about littering through the Lens on Litter Photo Contest. I encourage any adult and student photographers from our area to consider entering. The deadline is Oct. 31.
