PA LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus responds to SCOTUS ruling on trans athletes

HARRISBURG, June 30 – Following today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on transgender athletes, the PA LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus issued the following statement:

“Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can bar transgender athletes from participating in scholastic sports. This decision comes even though transgender athletes make up a minuscule fraction of young people participating in sports, with none currently identified in Pennsylvania.

“In Pennsylvania, and across the country, our Republican colleagues have devoted an extraordinary amount of time and energy to this issue instead of addressing the challenges families face every day. While they are focused on bringing the full weight of state government down on a small group of vulnerable young people, Democrats have been working to lower costs, tackle the affordability crisis, address the impacts of rapidly expanding data centers, strengthen public education, and ensure every Pennsylvanian is treated with dignity and protected from discrimination. ‘We, the People’ means all the people.

“Meanwhile, the Republican-controlled Senate has been defined by inaction, failing to advance meaningful legislation that improves the lives of Pennsylvanians.

“It is time for Republicans to refocus on the issues that matter. Will Republican senators finally join us in raising workers’ pay? Will they work with us to lower energy costs? Will they stand up to the devastating Medicaid cuts advanced by Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington instead of bullying children who just want the opportunity to participate alongside their classmates?

“Pennsylvania’s kids and their families deserve leaders who are focused on lowering costs, expanding opportunity, and solving real problems -- not a radical Supreme Court and extremist politicians who continue to make vulnerable kids the center of a manufactured political fight.”
