Family Care Act, new committee assignments and more!

Hello, District 42!

I had quite the first week as a member of the House of Representatives! I’d like to thank everyone who reached out to wish me well during my first week. It’s truly special to know that you support me as I work to support you every day.

From being sworn in on the House Floor to being a part of monumental votes, I began fighting for our communities right away.

This, we passed some really impactful legislation, including H.B. 200, the Family Care Act, a bill that I was proud to co-sponsor.

The bill, now on its way to the Senate, would establish new family and medical leave benefits for working Pennsylvanians. Originally authored by former Representative Dan Miller, the bill grants eligible employees up to 12 weeks of partial wage replacement for personal or family situations.

As someone who has had to take parental leave, the last thing I want is for Pennsylvanians to feel they must choose between their family’s well-being and their employment. That’s why I chose to co-sponsor this legislation: to let all residents know that the House Democrats and I have their back.

Roughly two-thirds of the state’s workforce lack access to paid family and medical leave. It is time for the Senate to do what is right by all Pennsylvanians—I hope my colleagues will move this legislation to the Governor’s desk.

This week, I also voted YES for:

  • H.B. 1834, which would regulate commercial data centers in the state. This bill would establish regulatory framework, drawing on actions from other states, to have these centers consume energy affordably and responsibly.
  • H.B. 2189, which would establish a new minimum wage in Pennsylvania. With this bill, the statewide minimum wage would increase to $11 per hour in 2027, the first raise of Pennsylvania’s minimum wage since 2009. The bill would provide a path for a $15 per hour wage statewide in 2029, and earlier in counties that choose to implement it.
  • H.B. 1800, which would repeal a section of Pennsylvania law that defines marriage as only being between a man and a woman. This bill would repeal provisions related to same-sex marriage and offers protections for all Pennsylvanians regardless of who they love.

I’m honored to join an incredible group of legislators in Harrisburg and look forward to doing more good work for our district and people across the Commonwealth.

House Committee Assignments

Another event during my first week in the House was receiving four committee assignments.

I will now be serving as part of the House Communications & Technology, Environmental & Natural Resource Protection, Finance, and Transportation committees. I’d like to thank these committee members for giving me a chance to advocate in subjects I’m passionate about. These positions will allow me to continue fighting for the 42nd District in key areas.

Stay connected to my weekly email blasts, as I’ll be giving you the firsthand account of major actions from these committees.

Mt. Lebanon Receives Grant Funding for EV Infrastructure

This past week, the Municipality of Mt. Lebanon received $35,000 from an investment via the Alternative Fuel Incentive Grant program, with funding to go toward electric vehicle infrastructure. Transportation is key in Allegheny County, and I’m proud to bring back this funding to support the diversification of our vehicles.

In The Community

I had the pleasure of being the keynote speaker at the Point Park University Honors Program Scholastic Writing Awards over the weekend. I was delighted to honor so many talented writers.

In my address, I spoke about the importance of writing and the creative arts. The work of these students highlights the true impact of writing—it allows us to wrestle with our ideas, our thoughts, and our inner selves. I commend all the students who submitted pieces, whether they won or not, as each of them grapples with the vast spectrum of human emotion and leaves us longing for worlds we can only imagine.

I congratulate all the winners and participants, and I look forward to supporting the Scholastic Writing Awards in the future.

Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, our office is here to help. You can reach us by phone at 412-343-3870 or visit us at 650 Washington Road, Suite 102, in Mt. Lebanon.

P.S. - Like other state offices, our office will be closed this Friday, April 3. We will reopen on Monday, April 6, at 8:30 a.m., and look forward to serving you then.
