Merski to host license plate legibility/replacement event May 31
Motorists can learn if their plate needs replacing, apply for new one

ERIE, May 17 – State Rep. Bob Merski is co-hosting a drive-through event on May 31 to help motorists learn whether they need a new license plate and, if so, to help them apply for a free replacement.
Merski, D-Erie, said the event – which he is co-hosting with AAA East Central and Pennsylvania State Police Troop E – will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the AAA Erie office at 6660 Peach St.
“We’re hosting this drive-through event to remind folks that state law prohibits driving with a plate that is illegible – meaning that it’s blistered, peeling or discolored; has lost reflectivity; or has at least one number of letter that can’t be recognized from 50 feet away. Plates with any of these problems qualify for free replacement.
“Motorists will have an opportunity to fill out the MV-44 application for a replacement plate, and a state trooper on site will sign off on the form if the plate qualifies. At a later date, after the paperwork is processed by PennDOT, folks will be notified that it is time to pick up their plates. It’s a great chance for motorists to address an important but sometimes overlooked issue.”
Merski said residents wishing to fill out the MV-44 application form before the event can pick up a copy at his 3901 Liberty St. district office.
