Neilson recognizes December as “Impaired Driving Prevention Month” in Pennsylvania

State Rep. Ed Neilson, chair of the PA House Transportation Committee, today recognized December as Impaired Driving Prevention Month in Pennsylvania.
Neilson noted that December is statistically one of the most dangerous months for drivers.
“From the very end of November until the first day in January, there are many major holidays during which people travel to see beloved family and friends to celebrate,” Neilson said. “Increased alcohol consumption during holiday gatherings and poor decision-making, such as driving under the influence, can have devastating, life-altering consequences for everyone on the road. Impaired drivers put not only themselves at risk, but also their passengers and anyone they encounter.”
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were more than 7,000 alcohol-related crashes in 2024, resulting in hundreds of fatalities.
“As chair of the House Transportation Committee -- and as a husband, father, and grandfather -- the safety of everyone who uses our roads is my utmost concern,” Neilson said. “When celebrating this holiday season, have a plan to get home safely by using ride-share services, choosing a designated driver, or taking public transportation.
“Please don’t let a bad decision be the reason someone doesn’t make it home this holiday season,” Neilson concluded.
The designation is supported by AAA and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
