Pashinski: $450,000 awarded for local projects addressing blight

HARRISBURG, June 9 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski today announced $450,000 in state funding has been awarded for two Luzerne County projects to address blighted properties in his legislative district.

“Research tells us that blight and poorly kept areas can raise the stress levels and lead to other adverse effects, including a decline in property value, neighborhood appearance and the general health of those living in those areas,” said Pashinski, D-Luzerne. “Which is why I wholeheartedly support this funding for projects that will look to renew financial wealth, neighborhood appearance and overall residential wealth in those communities.”

The projects, funded by the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund include:

  • $250,000 to Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania’s Brian’s Place – Will transform a vacant, blighted property in Wilkes-Barre into at least five units of affordable one-bedroom, energy-efficient units for adults experiencing homelessness or housing instability with persistent mental illness and other supportive housing services. In addition to the units, the plan includes a common area that will serve as a day space option for a small number of people in the community who are experiencing homelessness.
  • $200,000 to Lower South Valley Land Bank – Will address three blighted properties under LSV Land Bank jurisdiction. The land bank will acquire, secure, rehabilitate and sell three blighted residential properties to low-to-moderate income households.

PHARE was established in 2010 to provide the mechanism by which certain allocated state or federal funds, as well as funds from other outside sources, are used to assist with the creation, rehabilitation and support of affordable housing throughout the commonwealth. Residents can learn more here.
