McNeill celebrates House passage of digital advertising tax legislation

HARRISBURG, June 11 – State Rep. Jeanne McNeill said she was pleased to vote in favor of the Digital Ads Tax Bill (H.B. 1678), which passed the House Tuesday and would update Pennsylvania’s gross receipts tax to include the sale of digital advertisements.

“Currently, mega-corporations such as Google, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft make huge profits by using our personal data to direct nuisance ads at us,” said McNeill, D-Lehigh. “These pop-up ads, banner ads, and even video ads that begin playing immediately, make using the internet worse. It’s time these companies start to pay for doing this.”

By implementing a digital advertising tax, Maryland raised $170 million from Big Tech companies to fund public education in just a few years. Pennsylvania can do the same and gain revenue to prevent property tax hikes for seniors, McNeill said.

The bill is now with state Senate for further consideration.
