Haddock secures almost $2.9 million in state grants

HARRISBURG, Sept. 15 – State Rep. Jim Haddock announced that $2.86 million in state grants were awarded today for a variety of municipal improvement projects throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne counties.
“Today’s announcement continues my longstanding commitment to collaborating with state Sen. Marty Flynn, the Shapiro administration and my leadership team in ensuring that state tax dollars are returned to our area. From equipment upgrades, improving roads and bridges, and fighting blight, some of these projects might otherwise be unaffordable for the local budgets of our smaller communities,” Haddock said.
“I am glad to have played a part in securing today’s grants, which build on the $62 million in grants that I have brought home for schools; police, fire, and EMS; community infrastructure; veterans organizations; and water and sewer upgrades since I took office.”
Today’s grants were awarded through the Statewide Local Share Account Program, which is administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority and funded through a portion of gaming tax revenue generated at Pennsylvania’s casinos.
Grant recipients in Haddock’s district include:
Avoca Borough: $121,735 to purchase a dump truck.
Avoca Hose Co. No. 1: $250,000 to renovate the fire station by constructing a decontamination room with restroom and shower, connecting corridor, kitchen, dining and lounge areas, new flooring and ceiling, HVAC and lighting improvements, and renovating two restrooms.
Dupont Borough: $100,000 to purchase an 8-yard Diamondback Rear Loader with related accessories. The slimmer loader will allow public works department employees to streamline the pickup system on narrow streets.
Duryea Borough: $284,081 to replace the aging, leaking municipal building roof and construct a parking lot.
Lackawanna County: $500,000 for the Lakeview Commons/Montage Mountain Roadway Extension. The improvement and extension of Lakeview Commons will create an additional method of egress, improving overall traffic and safety for visitors to various venues at Montage Mountain.
Laflin Borough: $250,000 to replace a dilapidated pedestrian bridge with a prefabricated bridge with wood decking and install fencing along the walkway and track.
Moosic Little League: $75,000 to purchase and install a new lighting system on field two.
Moosic Police Department: $29,207 to upgrade its communications infrastructure that will allow the department to communicate seamlessly with surrounding public safety agencies.
North East Pennsylvania Land Bank: $75,000 to demolish and rehabilitate properties in Dupont Borough, Pittston City, and Plains Township, Luzerne County, with the ultimate goal of reducing and eliminating blight in the communities.
Old Forge Borough: $77,724 to build a dog park that includes water fountains, benches, run ramps, rest areas and trash receptacles.
Pittston City: $300,000 to construct an elevator at the future site of a city-owned theater on South Main Street. A separate $289,200 grant will be used to build a new outdoor stage called the Main Street Stage that will replace a deteriorated band shell in Pittston's central business district.
Pittston Township: $25,075 to purchase and install equipment for their emergency management utility vehicle. A separate $87,170 grant will be used to purchase and install an emergency generator at the municipal building.
West Abington Township: $150,000 for paving Stantontown Road from State Route 4020 Lake Winola Road to the township line.
West Side Council of Governments: $250,000 to purchase a new waste grinder, tar kettle, and bucket truck for maintenance work in Edwardsville Borough, Forty Fort Borough, and West Pittston Borough.
