Don’t get “Ad-itated,” instead pass the Digital Advertising Tax

Are you tired of the constant digital ads that seem to follow you everywhere online? The ads that appear on Facebook, Instagram, and across the internet can feel invasive and unavoidable. If these platforms are generating enormous profits by selling our attention to advertisers, then they should also be contributing their fair share back to the Commonwealth.

That is why I am proud to be a cosponsor of House Bill 1678, the Digital Advertising Tax. This legislation would ensure that revenue generated from Pennsylvanians’ online activity is reinvested in our communities, with hundreds of millions of dollars in potential annual support for schools, infrastructure, housing, and other public priorities.

For too long, some of the largest tech companies in the world have profited from Pennsylvanians while contributing far less than they should toward the services and infrastructure that make their business possible. HB 1678 helps correct that imbalance and ensures a fairer return for our Commonwealth.

We’re also advancing a range of additional legislation to address pressing needs across Pennsylvania.

  • Ensuring access to affordable housing by increasing transparency and protections for homeowners entering shared appreciation agreements (HB 2120).
  • Expanding housing options by allowing accessory dwelling units on residential properties (HB 2186).
  • Protecting students by advancing a bell-to-bell mobile device policy in schools (HB 1814).
  • Strengthening student health response through seizure recognition training for school personnel (HB 1045).
  • Ensuring schools can maintain and administer short-acting asthma medications when needed (HB 2117).
  • Protecting people by directing a statewide public education campaign on artificial intelligence so Pennsylvanians can better understand and safely navigate its risks and uses (HB 2314).
  • Increasing access to care by allowing terminally ill patients to access medical marijuana in non-smokable, non-vape forms in appropriate care settings (HB 2254).
  • Supporting workers and small businesses by allowing small business owners to claim a tax credit for contributing to their employees’ health insurance premiums through Pennie.
  • Supporting first responders by helping volunteer, municipal, and combined fire companies pay for new trucks, safety gear, and station upgrades (HB 2446).
  • Ensuring every vote counts in a timely manner by allowing counties to pre-canvass mail ballots (HB 37) and keeping foreign money out of elections (HB 497).
  • Supporting families by safeguarding access to fertility treatments in Pennsylvania (HB 836).
  • Expanding protections against nonconsensual sharing of real or AI-generated intimate images (HB 2252).
  • Protecting public health by banning PFAS “forever chemicals” in cosmetics, dental floss, juvenile products, and menstrual products (HB 2145).

These bills now head to the Senate for further consideration.

Opportunity for college students

Know a college student interested in state government? Let them know the PA House Legislative Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2026 semester.

The Fellowship Program is based in the state Capitol in Harrisburg. Fellows are placed in House committees or leadership offices, are compensated (and sometimes earn college credit), and gain hands-on experience drafting and presenting legislation, meeting with public officials, and touring historic state sites.

Go to pahousefellowship.us for more information and directions on how to apply.

Attorney General warns students and graduates about job scams

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General is reminding residents, especially students and recent graduates, to use caution when reviewing online job opportunities and to watch for potential scams.

Employment scams, particularly fake work-from-home offers, often promise high pay, flexible schedules, or easy income. In many cases, scammers use fraudulent job postings and applications to steal personal or financial information.

Officials note that common warning signs include requests for upfront payment, instructions to handle or re-ship packages, or offers involving purchasing and reselling goods. In some instances, scammers may send checks that later prove to be fraudulent or request payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Job seekers are encouraged to:

  • Research companies and recruiters by searching for reviews or complaints.
  • Speak with a trusted friend or family member before accepting an offer.
  • Avoid any job that requires payment as part of the hiring process.
  • Verify job offers using official company contact information.
  • Carefully review email addresses to ensure they match legitimate domains.

Residents are also advised to use reputable job platforms and be cautious of unsolicited job offers.

Anyone who believes they may have encountered a scam is encouraged to report it to the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Lionizing the efforts of PSU grad students

I support the graduate assistants at Penn State who have voted overwhelmingly to form a union. Recently, several of these graduate assistants stopped by my Harrisburg office to discuss their efforts and share why this issue matters to them. I was impressed by their commitment, professionalism, and engagement in the democratic process.

Graduate assistants play a critical role in Penn State’s research and educational mission. They have made their voices heard through a clear and decisive vote in favor of unionization, and that voice deserves to be respected. I call on Penn State to drop its appeal seeking to exclude Research Assistants from the graduate assistants’ union and to honor the outcome of the election.

My office can help you!

Around the community

Days like the Pocono Pride Festival remind me why I love serving in this role. It was wonderful to join so many community members, families, advocates, and local organizations in celebrating inclusion, acceptance, and the diversity that makes our region stronger. Events like this bring people together, foster understanding, and highlight the best of our community. Thank you to everyone who helped organize this year’s Pocono Pride Festival and to all who attended and helped make it such a meaningful and joyful celebration.

Congratulations to Wyatt Ayden Hubbard on earning your Eagle Scout badge! What an impressive young man with such a bright future ahead of him—41 merit badges by the age of 17. Incredible!

June is always a busy month in Harrisburg as budget negotiations move forward. Earlier this month, I was glad to spend time with members of SEIU, who stopped by to discuss their legislative priorities, including increased funding for nursing homes to protect the quality of care our seniors deserve, greater transparency in ownership and operations, and policies that support a living wage for workers. These are important conversations, and I appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from the people and organizations working every day to strengthen our communities. Hearing from advocates, workers, and constituents helps inform the legislative process and ensures that the voices of Pennsylvanians are represented as we make decisions that affect communities across the Commonwealth.

It was great to welcome Stroudsburg Borough Mayor Ellen Currie and Councilwoman Claire Crawford-Braun to the Capitol during their visit to Harrisburg. Local leaders play an essential role in shaping strong communities, and I always appreciate the opportunity to discuss the issues facing Stroudsburg and Monroe County. Collaboration between state and local governments helps ensure that the needs of our residents are heard and represented.

I appreciated meeting with the Pocono Mountains Association of REALTORS® to discuss their legislative priorities and the challenges facing homeowners, buyers, and real estate professionals across our region. Housing affordability, property rights, and economic development remain important issues for communities throughout Pennsylvania, and conversations like these help inform the work we do in Harrisburg.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent discussion on data centers at the Smithfield Township meeting. I was encouraged by the thoughtful questions, active participation, and respectful dialogue throughout the evening. Public engagement is critical when communities are considering issues that may have long-term impacts, and I appreciate residents taking the time to share their perspectives and help shape the conversation.
