HARRISBURG, April 21 – More work on the Delaware & Lehigh Trail will be completed thanks to a $166,000 grant awarded today by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, according to state Rep. Mike Schlossberg.
“The Lehigh Valley has wonderful trails, but they aren’t equally available to all neighborhoods. Allentown, as the heart of the Lehigh Valley, is surprisingly disconnected from some of the great opportunities north of the city. Projects like this will help to increase equity within our region,” Schlossberg said.
The proposed project will widen and resurface 1.5 miles of trail and reconstruct a small
bridge across a historic lock to extend the existing section of the trail.
“This is just one part of a larger endeavor which involves extending the D&L Trail on both sides of the Lehigh River. Once complete, it will provide Allentown residents access to the wider D&L trail and all the benefits trails provide,” Schlossberg said.
The grant was provided from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program, which is funded by a portion of the impact fees paid through the development of unconventional gas wells across Pennsylvania.
