Hi all, this is Grace Richter. As my second year as an intern for Rep. Nelson ends, and I head off to grad school at Drexel to start my master’s in public policy, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on another great summer at Rep. Nelson’s office. 

I’m so glad I had this opportunity again. It has helped me gain experience in problem solving, communication, collaboration, and research, among many other skills. 

While saying goodbye is always hard, I am very grateful for the time I spent as an intern here this summer. I am so glad I could come back, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I have both formed new skills and honed old ones, and it has been great to observe my growth since last year. My confidence in both myself and my capabilities has increased as well, and I couldn’t have asked for a better environment to grow in. 

I am so thankful for all the time I got to spend working with constituents, reuniting with my colleagues, and servicing our community. I would like to extend my gratitude toward Rep. Nelson, the whole office staff, and of course, the constituents. This is not an easy goodbye, but I hope to return in the future should the opportunity arise. 

Labor Day may feel like summer’s last hurrah, a long weekend for cookouts, road trips, and one final trip to the beach. Culturally, it’s the unofficial bookend to summer: school is back or about to begin, town pools close, lifeguards pack up, and local ice cream stands start saying, “See you next year.”

But astronomically, summer isn’t over yet! Summer officially continues through the September equinox, which falls on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. So there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy. ??

Labor Day is also about much more than the long weekend. It is a chance to recognize the hardworking people who keep our communities and country moving forward and to appreciate the progress, freedoms, and prosperity made possible by generations of workers.

While Labor Day is uniquely American, May 1, International Workers’ Day, or May Day, is celebrated around the world as a day honoring workers and the labor movement. Together, these traditions reflect a shared appreciation for the important role that working people play in our communities and our lives.

The first Labor Day celebrations featured parades, picnics, speeches, fireworks, and time off from work. More than 140 years later, the spirit of the day remains much the same.

So, before the long weekend disappears into errands and chores, take some time to celebrate, relax, and enjoy the people and places that make summer memorable.??

?? Labor Day Holiday Hours

In observance of Labor Day, my office will CLOSE tomorrow, September 4th at NOON and remain closed through Monday, September 7th.

We will be open for our regular walk-in hours on Tuesday, September 8th, from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Big changes are coming to Pennsylvania’s Medicaid program beginning January 1st, 2027. Under a new federal law, some adults ages 19-64 will need to meet new work and community-engagement requirements, and some Medicaid recipients will have their eligibility reviewed every six months instead of annually.

If you receive Medicaid, it is important to make sure that DHS has your current address and contact information so you do not miss notices about your benefits. You can update your information through COMPASS and sign up for text and email alerts from DHS.
