Our trees on the line
Last week, the community came out in full force to express concern over Duquesne Light's tree-trimming policies. Thank you to the Methodist Church, Tree Pittsburgh, and Upstream Pittsburgh for hosting and organizing. Duquesne Light was not in attendance.
The day after the meeting, I met with the Wilkinsburg Borough Manager, several council members, and Shade Tree Committee members. We discussed ways to minimize future tree removals by Duquesne Light, with the goal of saving some of the trees marked for removal this year. I was grateful to them for sharing their time and expertise on preserving the canopy while ensuring safe tree clearance. For trees that absolutely must be removed, we will be advocating for suitable young trees to be planted as replacements. There will be a community meeting to discuss this issue at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Wilkinsburg Borough Building, 605 Ross Ave.
Funding to empower people
As chair of our Autism and Intellectual Disabilities Caucus, I recently attended an event in Canonsburg hosted by Arc Human Services, where we listened to Eugene Willis, a participant and board member for the Arc. I strongly support Gov. Shapiro’s message about the importance of funding for these vital organizations, which help Pennsylvanians with disabilities lead empowered, more independent lives. We also need to ensure that our direct support professionals receive sufficient pay to remain in this field. I want nothing more than to return to Harrisburg and vote for a budget that provides appropriately for these essential programs.
Mentor program expanded
The PA Mentor-Protégé Program pairs experienced contractors with small, diverse, and veteran-owned businesses to help them grow, compete, and win state contracts. Visit this page to learn more about the program.
Also, please remember that the state offers a Business One-Stop Shop website, which provides helpful resources for small business owners.
