My bill to restore newborn screening for Gaucher disease becomes law!

Important news on a pressing medical issue for some families: Last week, the governor signed my bill to restore newborn testing for Gaucher disease—an inherited genetic disorder that can cause wide-ranging medical issues. The new law will ensure that parents get critical information as early as possible so their children can receive the early medical intervention they need for a better outcome.

In other House news, I voted for – and the House passed – bills that would:

  • Allow judges to delay eviction of some tenants during extreme weather.
  • Increase transparency regarding utility rates by requiring the PUC to maintain an online public database of rates and proposed increases.
  • Require insurance coverage for colorectal cancer screenings starting at 45, osteoporosis testing and treatment, and vaginal estrogen to treat menopause symptoms and prevent UTIs.
  • Update the child and dependent care tax credit to better help families with childcare and living expenses.
  • Require childcare providers to keep EpiPens and train staff on their use.
  • Protect privacy by limiting the use of license plate readers like Flock cameras.
  • Ban students’ use of cell phones during the school day.
  • Promote the adoption of dogs and cats used in research.
  • Prohibit data centers from obtaining public utility status.

Visit this page to read more about these and other bills we passed last week in the House. All of these bills now head to the state Senate for consideration.

In other House news, our Allegheny County Delegation gathered last week to offer a fond farewell to our colleague Rep. Anita Kulik (center), who is retiring after a decade of service to her district.
