Steele responds to injunction regarding Cheswick Power Station implosion

HARRISBURG, Dec. 12 – Following Judge John McVay issuing an injunction in response to the June implosion at Cheswick Power Station, Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Allegheny, affirmed her commitment to address residents’ concerns.

CPERG, Grant Mackay Co., and Controlled Demolition Inc. led the demolition of two smokestacks at the Cheswick Power Plant on Friday, June 2. Residents in Allegheny Valley contacted Steele’s office raising concern about potential exposure to hazardous materials from the implosion.

“While the plaintiffs and defendants such as CPERG, Grant Mackay Co., Controlled Demolition Inc. and others work toward a resolution to continue with the implosion, I will work closely with constituents and the Department of Environmental Protection to ensure that the implosion safely occurs,” Steele said. “To address these issues, I will aim to implement regulations to protect Pennsylvanians’ health from contamination at toxic sites, specifically regarding coal demolition sites, through legislation.”

An implosion of the Boiler House Building within the Cheswick Power Station was first scheduled for Friday, Sept. 22.

Steele said residents may contact her office at 724-826-5151 about any concerns.
