Rep. Takac, Centre Care to host Scam Seminar and Senior Fair Oct. 14

STATE COLLEGE, Oct. 6 – Scams targeting older adults are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it more important than ever for seniors and their families to know how to recognize, avoid and report them.

That’s why state Rep. Paul Takac, D-Centre, and Centre Care are bringing the community together for a Scam Seminar and Senior Fair, connecting older adults and their families with local agencies, nonprofits and other trusted community resources.

The event will provide practical information on how to spot the latest scams, protect personal and financial information, and report suspected fraud to the appropriate authorities. Attendees will also be able to connect directly with organizations and local service providers that can help seniors access resources and support in the community.

“Pennsylvania has one of the largest senior populations in the U.S., and that demographic is growing faster than any other age group in the Commonwealth. As our senior population continues to grow, we want to make sure older Pennsylvanians and their families have easy access to the resources, services and information they need to stay healthy, safe and connected in their communities,” Takac said.

Takac’s third annual senior fair and seminar will take place Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Centre Care, 250 Persia Road, Bellefonte.

The Senior Fair, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature representatives from state, county and local organizations, as well as free flu vaccines and health screenings provided by Penn State.

The Scam Seminar will begin at 1 p.m. and is expected to conclude at 2:30 p.m. Panelists will include representatives from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, First National Bank, the Centre County Office of Aging and the Centre County District Attorney's Office.

State offices participating in the Senior Fair include Takac’s, which will be available to help seniors access state services, including handicap placards and the Department of Aging’s Pharmaceutical Assistance programs, known as PACE and PACENET. In addition to the county Aging office and state Attorney General’s Office, representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Centre County Veterans Affairs, Centre County Drug and Alcohol also are expected to attend.

Other participating organizations include Centre Care, Mount Nittany Health Endocrinology, Interfaith Human Services, Geisinger, MidPenn Legal Services, Centre Helps, the Mount Nittany Medical Center Foundation, Centre Region Active Adult Center, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, UPMC, State College YMCA, Centre Safe, Ladore Camp Retreat & Conference Center, CATA, PA Link to Aging and Disability Resources, Home Instead and Lion Mobile Clinic.
