Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
Yesterday, I had the honor of standing with my friends and fellow state Representatives La’Tasha D. Mayes of Allegheny County and Speaker Joanna McClinton of Philadelphia County as Governor Shapiro signed the Pennsylvania Crown Act into law.
To say I’m proud of these women and this new law is an understatement. Hair discrimination has long been a form of subtle racism, used in classrooms and workplaces to deny access to opportunities, athletic competitions, events, and more. The “norm” in many of these settings has been shaped by typical white American hairstyles, leaving little room for Black Americans to wear styles that are culturally significant to them – such as locs, braids, twists, cornrows, Afros, and more.
Under this new law, Pennsylvanians will have the right to wear their hair however they choose, without fear of harassment or being excluded from opportunities, advancement, sports, or educational and professional spaces. This is a huge step forward.
I love serving as your state representative for so many reasons, and I am especially honored to hold this position when I get to help enact laws like this one. With the passage of the Pennsylvania Crown Act, we join 27 other states in protecting a cultural freedom that, so far, is not safeguarded by federal law.
Please join me in celebrating this great milestone!
